Welcome Families and Friends of Eagle Point.
The 2009-2010 school year started exceptionally smooth. The students are settling into their new schedules, new teachers, and new friends. We begin the year with 375 students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade. The staff set a goal to reach 80% proficiency in both math and reading on the spring 2010 MCA-II test. We intend on meeting that goal by focusing heavily on reading and math.
RtI (Response to Intervention) is the model we are using for improving student achievement. The entire staff will be working as a team to ensure that each and every student is supported in reading and math. We will be assessing students and identifying those needing additional instruction. This instruction may be in the classroom, in a small group, or through an intense guided program. RtI is a three-tiered approach to helping all of our student show growth in their learning.
The staff is continuing with our behavior management, Responsive Classroom; we all look forward to the monthly all school Morning Meetings which are educational and very enjoyable for the students and the staff. This past summer, our building Para’s and Mrs. Finn worked on ideas to implement better student behavior on the playground, in the library, lunchroom and bathrooms. New this year, we are asking that students address the support staff with respect by using Mrs., Ms., or Miss.
Math Expressions is the name of the new math curriculum being taught for the first time this year to all of our classrooms. The first grade teachers piloted the series last year. I believe Math Expressions offers a child's way of thinking and processing math. I was impressed with the first grade portion that I viewed last year.
Over the summer SMART boards were installed in all of our classrooms. Be sure to ask your children how their class is using the SMART board. This new technology allows interaction between the computer and the whiteboard in the front of the classroom. Students and teachers can manipulate information on the SMART board as well. The boards appear to keep student attention and interactions throughout the day. We appreciate the financial support that the Eagle Point Parent Group has provided to help with this project.
